Well that might work OK for you , but me an loads of other folk have never found it quite that simple
so where do all those nasty chemicals end up if you dont water your garden with them then?

Well indirectly thats what you might do . if the stuff gets into the ground water it may well get absorbed by your garden plants anyway. and if it gets into the river it could get into your mains water and from there via your sprinkler onto your plants or worse still into your coffee. Wouldn’t it make more sense to preserve the shingles with something less toxic?
Doesn’t look like a well designed garden – Raised beds should be small enough to walk around rather than stand in. Up to 4 foot wide is a good, allowing for all gardening tasks to be performed from outside the raised bed. One of the benefits of a proper raised bed – you will not compact the soil.
I think square foot gardening is a better method than this
